New Board Members:
Hispanics in Philanthropy welcomes new board member Mary Skelton Roberts, an environmental expert and senior program officer in Boston’s Barr Foundation. She joins Danielle Gonzales, senior policy officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Joyce Lee, chief financial officer of the Marguerite Casey Foundation, and Cleveland Foundation President and CEO Ronald B. Richard, who were elected to the board earlier this year.
Leadership Distinction:
HIP President Diana Campoamor last month was among the honorees at The NonProfit Times Top 50 Gala. Campoamor, who was selected for the distinction two years in a row, attended the gala in Washington in September. In its August edition, The NonProfit Times noted that Campoamor “has transformed an organization of volunteer advocates into a multinational philanthropic network of more than 600 funders.” She joined Bill Gates and Marion Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund as repeat honorees. Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, also made the 2013 list.
HIP Aging Fellows:
The California Latino Aging Initiative announced the selection this summer of its first group of Senior Fellows and their projects. The inaugural class includes:
- Judi Bonilla, who teaches computer literacy and brain fitness for senior citizens, is developing a transportation program to boost Latino seniors’ confidence in getting around without driving and showing them how to use computers, maps and other skills to access low-cost transportation in San Diego County
- Nonprofit management consultant Cheryl Brownstein-Santiago, a Long Beach-based journalism veteran, is helping initiative grantees to formulate and execute communications plans
- Coco Corona, a Bay Area advertising and marketing art director, is applying her Latitudes Empowerment series to develop leadership and promote community advocacy among older Latinos in California.
The California Latino Age Wave is a project of The Atlantic Philanthropies, The California Wellness Foundation and The SCAN Foundation, developed in partnership with HIP for innovative services and programs that support the well-being of California’s Latino older adult populations.
