A Call for Investing in Latinx Grassroots Movements

Compelling Philanthropy to Reinforce Investments For Civil Rights in the South

Oakland, CA – In June, Hispanics in Philanthropy’s (HIP) Collective Corazón annual conference including prominent Latinx social sector and nonprofit leaders, advocates, funders, and policymakers will convene in Miami, FL, to bring catalytic conversations center stage. In light of recently passed legislation in Florida including censorship of topics of race and gender that impact LGBTIQ+ folks, the transgender community, the safety of undocumented families, voter disenfranchisement, and access to reproductive health, the convening will be followed by additional investment in the region. The HIP Board of Directors calls on the philanthropic sector to join in solidarity with communities in Florida ahead of June. 

“For almost 40 years, HIP has challenged the status quo and influenced philanthropy to better serve Latinxs. Our principles and commitment to racial equity are rooted in leveraging our privilege and our power — unapologetically challenging white supremacist structures to build pathways towards racial equity and liberation. 

“We will host conversations with grassroots leaders, elected officials, and funders so that we can invest collectively in the multiracial movement-building in the state. Guided by community partners, we join ACLU of Florida, Hispanic Federation, and Funders for LGBTQ Issues, to bring resources locally that mobilize, support, and activate against the despicable attacks on civil liberties and human rights. At HIP, we believe that every Latinx has the right to live a just and prosperous life. We will continue to raise additional funds to boost resources for organizers in the South, including Florida, and we encourage our funders and partners to do the same.”
